Colon Intubation Assist Device
Colon Intubation Assist Device (CIAD) is a simple, low-cost and disposable accessory device compatible with conventional flexible endoscopes for facilitating insertion of the endoscope all the way to the cecum, the deepest part of the colon.
Relying on the proprietary Colon Grasping Technology (see Core Technology page for more information), a CIAD makes it possible for a physician to pull to pleat a segment of the colon over the shaft of the endoscope, effectively shortening it, as the endoscope is advanced into the colon. The new technique also helps the physician to straighten or soften the angles of numerous curves and sharp bends in the colon in its native disposition within abdominal and pelvic cavities making pushing maneuver to advance the tip of endoscope more effective.
The conventional, difficult maneuvers for navigating the endoscope through these tortuous sections of the colon, which most often cause over-stretching of mesenteries and associated procedure pain, are less likely needed with the use of CIAD.
Features of CIAD are:
Disposable – No sterilization or maintenance needed
Easy to use – Little overhead in procedure time and effort
Safe to use – Negligible possibility of patient injury
No up-front investment – Low economic barrier to adoption, Compatible with conventional endoscopes
Mild learning curve – Low technological barrier to adoption
Complementary to conventional intubation techniques – Low behavioral barrier to adoption
Various configurations of CIAD:
On-scope – Mounted on the endoscope prior to initial insertion
On-demand – Introduced through the accessory channel anytime during procedure
Small Bowel – Used with conventional small bowel enteroscope
Advantages of Colon Intubation Assist Device
Shortened insertion time (procedure duration) – Increased patient throughput
Elimination or reduction of sedation – Lower procedure cost, Increases patient throughput
Reduced training requirement – Colonoscopy service provider and product usage base widened
Lower procedure cost – Private insurance coverage widened
Provider Adoption Drivers
Requires little disruption to the existing practice patterns and financials
Brings visible improvement in patient care and short term financial returns to providers
